For-Profit Schools
Today’s (August 23, 2011) Wall Street Journal had an interesting article in the Marketplace section about the decline in enrollment at the for-profit schools, “Party Ends at For-Profit Schools.” There has been so much controversy over the role of education in people’s lives, and these schools have caused heated exchanges. Part of the challenge is students being given access to getting degrees that are beyond their capabilities and/or income potential. Students were being admitted, even though the chances of failing were high, ending up with debt and no degree after dropping out. And for those who graduated from programs, they might find that they could never earn enough to pay off their debt. Who should we fault, the schools for not “protecting” students from themselves or the students for being “naive” about “predatory” practices?
